North End Pied-à-terre

North End, Boston, MA
Design Style: Transitional
Located in Boston's North End on the waterfront, this three story unit was built in the 1980s and the interior was still "vintage 1980s." During demolition the original brickwork and historic beams were uncovered and there was immediate consensus that we needed to incorporate them into the design.

One of the greatest design challenges was to make the three story unit accessible for aging-in-place for this couple. The design team created a glass-enclosed elevator that was encased by the stair. All of the mechanical workings of the elevator were exposed. Between design, permitting and getting the materials the elevator took a year to execute.

In the suburbs, this couple lives in a Victorian home and they wanted their city pied-à-terre to feel warm and modern, complementing the brickwork and exposed beams while also being comfortable and age appropriate.
